Two years ago, Sandra MacDonald recommended that I visit Bisti Wilderness and I have been looking forward to it ever since. This year I was lucky enough to camp here with my friend Anne.
It is a place of infinite natural wonders. The first day we
set out with the directions that we should head for the two red mounds we
should see from our campground and then turn left and keep walking, oh a couple
of miles. And so we did. Also mindful
that there are no trails here, lots of canyons and it is easy to get lost, we
wandered in and out of canyons ever mindful of where the main wash was so we
could find our way back.
We spent an enjoyable day hiking and photographing various
formations, giving our own names to various areas. For instance we later
learned that something we referred to as “the rose garden” was commonly labeled
“the eggs”. We also saw petrified wood
and formations others labeled as “the wings”.
We spent a second day happily meandering through different
sections a little more confident that we would find our way out. I would
happily return to spend more time here. The camping is free, the scenery
amazing and sunrises and sunsets to boot!
